The Brief

The focus of this project was to bring the outdoors in. The existing office had great access to outdoor areas so when the client made the decision to relocate, the key goal was to retain that connection to the outdoors, making this project incredibly unique and different.

The main design challenge was the multi-floor element and the coordination of the different works between design and construction, particularly with regards to the staircase.

Another all important consideration was bringing the team on the journey as the relocation from Narrabeen to St Leonards would be an adjustment for many of the staff.

The Outcome

The solution was to carry out several workshops with the team at RSL, and to follow through with consistent collaboration throughout the entire strategy and design process, through to the construction phase. This paved the way for a strong alignment between RSL and Axiom, which in turn influenced the interpretation of the brief and our resulting approach to the design. This collaborative relationship was instrumental in the successful delivery of the desired design outcome.

The most exciting design element of the project is undoubtedly the tree on level 4. This feature reinforces the clients’ connection to nature through bringing the outdoors inside and can be seen as an homage to their previous workspace. It is an innovation unique to this project.
