Workplace Strategy Informs the New Office Design
Wardell Chambers sought the expertise of Axiom to develop a comprehensive workplace strategy, as well as to design and construct the fit-out of their new office space on Elizabeth Street, Sydney. This move was necessitated by the State Government's acquisition of their previous building, which they had occupied for approximately 20 years, for an infrastructure project. Consequently, this placed them under significant time constraints to relocate. The newly chosen office space spans a single level with a floor area of 850 square meters, and the objective was to create a personalised office chamber for each resident barrister.
Functional Team Interviews
The Axiom strategy team conducted interviews with the barristers to identify the specific activities and functional requirements necessary for their personal chamber. This data was then utilised by the designers to develop conceptual designs and guide the barristers in visualising their new offices. They worked collaboratively with each barrister to achieve the desired level of finish. This entire process demanded a high degree of organisation and commitment from both the strategy and design teams, ensuring that each barrister could establish their unique chambers while maintaining an overall cohesive aesthetic.
The Design Brief
To cultivate a collegial atmosphere, Wardell Chambers encountered a significant challenge in planning a transformation of their workplace—aiming to foster cohesion and community among a collection of individual office spaces. The office finishes selected were of premium quality, featuring detailed craftsmanship. With the urgency of time being a critical factor, Wardell sought a skilled office fit-out company with the expertise to deliver the redesigned space within a restricted timeline. Axiom successfully designed and executed the tailored high-end fit-out, despite the demanding on-site schedule.
The Finished Offices
This new workspace embodies the brand of Wardell Chambers, a firm established in 1977. Upon entering the completed Wardell Chambers office, visitors will be impressed by the quality of the furnishings and finishes, which reflect a traditional aesthetic. In addition to the numerous barrister chambers there are two mediation rooms, the Hughes Room and the Ellicott Room, named in honor of two distinguished former Heads of Chambers: the Honourable Tom Hughes AO QC, and the Honourable Robert Ellicott AC QC. Axiom successfully created an outstanding workplace that accommodates the specific needs of the barristers, while also preserving the long-standing tradition of the firm.
